First Day, First Patient

Posted on Mon May 24th, 2021 @ 11:35pm by Lieutenant Commander Ryan Blake & Ensign Eretria & Lieutenant Commander Sheena Toran-Blake & Lieutenant Commander Robert Hendon

Mission: The Thorion Conundrum Mission Brief
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: TBD

Lieutenant Blake was brought into Sickbay by Ensign Eretria. The right side of his face swollen from the powerful backhanded hit he had received from the leader of the Orion Pirate gang he'd encountered on Thorion III.

Eretria looked at the duty nurse as she shouldered Ryan into Sickbay. "Need a hand here."

Doing inventory is the quickest way to get to know a dispensary. She wasn't expecting anything to happen today until she got the message that a victim with head trauma is heading her way. Normally a Medical officer would do examination but since Doctor Ayasha is absent, she became the first in line to handle these situations.

She checks if she had left her medical tricorder in her pocket when the entrance door swings open. She immediately helps assisting the victim to an examination table. "Hi, My name is Nurse Kimberly Peeters. What happened?"

Ryan knew it would be too painful to speak and used sign language to respond to Kimberly's question. 'This is what happens when you piss off the Not So Jolly Green Giant.'

Kimberly looked confused at the Lieutenant and directed her attention to the swelling on the right side of his face. She carefully helped him lay down on the bio bed. "So lieutenant ... Blake" she read from his insignia. I'm gonna use my tricorder to see if there's more going on than just bruising. Can you tell me what happened instead security officer?"

Eretria nodded as she took out her PADD and brought up the video file of the Away Teams capture by the Orions. "Lieutenant Blake was struck once on the right side of his face by an Orion. The person appeared to be extraordinarily strong."

"Oh god, that must have hurt!", she said shocked. She took her tricorder and scanned the bruise, making sure the lieutenant didn't loose consciousness. The results confirmed her suspicion. "The initial results tell me you have an "Intracranial hemorrhage she said. "Lets get you under the sensor clustor to see what's going wrong so we can treat it immediately!"

Eretria assisted in helping Kimberly to move Ryan to the new area for treatment before turning to leave. "I am needed back on the bridge. If you will excuse me."

With the family all settled Robert decided to check in on Sickbay. As he walked in Hendon noticed a patient being moved. Robert walked over to them.

“My goodness someone’s been to work on this poor soul. Dr Robert Hendon reporting for duty. How can I help you?” He said.

"Welcome Dr. Robert, my name is nurse Peeters, acting CMO. Sooo... Lieutenant Blake here was captured and got a severe blow to his head. My tricorder said it's an Intracranial hemorrhage. He didn't loose conscience but is unable to communicate. I was planning on giving him a light sedative in order get him comfortable under the sensor. We need an image of his skull in order to proceed. You couldn't have come at a better time doctor! " she smiled.

Hendon thought.

oO Brain bleed......can’t speak....... sounds like damage to Broca’s area.....frontal lobe.....dominant hemisphere.....left side of brain......speech centre.......Oo Hendon thought

“Very good Peeters. It’s sounds like there has been damage to the left side of his frontal lobe. If he can’t talk..... but with a brain bleed like this. It’s important to know if that is all that has been damaged. So I’ll help you get him under the sensor. Just tell me what you need.” Hendon said

Ryan pointed to several areas of the right side of his face before gesturing in ASL the word hurts. He had seen the confusion on the nurse's face when he had first used sign language. It was a distinct possibility she didn't know sign language. He was hoping the doctor did.

Robert noticed Blake making hand signals. He watched him closely and nodded.

“Sign language! He's using sign language! That’s good the damage to his brain may not be as bad as was first thought. Pain in right side of face. Ryan? Is your first name?....” Hendon asked

Ryan nodded. He signed the letters PADD.

Looking around Robert found a padd. Which he picked up and gave to Ryan.

“Here. ” Hendon said as he gave Ryan the device.

Sheena came flying into sickbay......"Ryan! Oh my god he's in pain!........can't handle his pain.......noooooo Ryan!" with buckling knees, she crumbles to the floor holding her head as the pain from Ryan makes her head feel like exploding.

Ryan looked at the PADD as he typed what had occurred on the surface of Thorion Three and the rescue by the Thorion authorities. He breathed deeply and finished his report just as Sheena arrived. He thrust the PADD into her hand. 'Imzadi, the incident report is on this PADD. Get it to the Captain. Hopefully it will help to formulate a rescue pl....', Ryan's thoughts abruptly became chaotic as an intense pain shot from head to toe. His eyes rolled up as his body violently began to shake.

Please help him quickly," Sheena said weakly still grasping the PADD that Ryan thrust at her.

Hendon could see he was having a seizure. He looked at the Bio bed readings.

“The bleeding is getting worse. We may not have time to get him under the probe. The artery needs to be fixed now our well loose him....we’ve no choice prep him for surgery...” Hendon said

Sheena was still holding the PADD Ryan thrust at her. She knew she had to get it to Maia and quickly, just as soon as the pain subsides.

Robert looked at Sheena then back at Ryan. Great he had not been on board the Leto for more then half a day. Now not only did he have a patient with a serious brain bleed. But his Imazdi as well who would not do to well if he lost Ryan. Hendon had had enough of losing people. He decided no one dies today.

“ Ok. It’s no good Peeters. We need to act now. Set up a sterile field around his head espically the left side. Those green bullies just love to use people’s heads , as punch bags. Set the neural calliper to medium we dare not go to high.” Hendon said.

He reached over and picked up a device for repairing archeries in the brain. Hendon checked the settings then he looked over to Peeters.

“Is it ok if I do this? “He asked her.

Sheena knew she had to get the PADD to Maia now but she feared for Ryan. "I will be back, make sure you contact me if his condition changes Doc," she said and headed for the bridge.

"I'm normally not fond of giving up control but in this particular situation I'm more than happy to assist an actual MO with more experience and better skills. How did I not recognise the sign language? It doesn't help beating myself up for this. I have to focus on the the lieutenant's deteriorating condition."

"I think it's in the lieutenants best interest that you take over Doc! I will gladly assist you but when we get through this we have to sort the CMO position out with captain Sterling so we know where we both stand in the absence of current CMO Ayasha!", said Peeters. She wouldn't admit it but was secretly relieved he took over.

Hendon nodded.

“I know that I have only just arrived on the Leto. I did not wish to step on your toes. By just barging in and pushing my weight around. Ok let’s help our friend.” He said

"Alright doctor H!", Peeters said. She was confident that they could save the lieutenants life. She graduated as a top class nurse and was able to work with everybody but trust was something that could help a great deal in this kind of situations. She was convinced that the new doctor was sincere and honest, qualities she admired in her field of work.

Taking the artery repairing device he placed it on Ryan’s head.

“Keep an eye on his vital signs any hint of a drop let me know.” Hendon replied.

"Doctor H, the vitals are unstable, they seem to drop! ", said Peeters.

It took Sheena all of fifteen minutes to deliver the PADD and relay her report to the captain and return to sickbay. Quickly walking in, she saw them working on Ryan ad she waited for them to finish before speaking.

It soon became clear that the surgery on Ryan was not going to plan. Robert became concerned that the vital signs were still dropping. He slowed down the rate of repair on the device. Although the decline was slowing. It was still there. Picking up a hypo Robert pressed at the controls and gently pushed it against Ryan’s neck. There was a gentle hiss. He looked at Peeters.

“We have a problem. They really did a number on his head. His system has been weakened not only by this blow. But the delay in getting Ryan to a sickbay, would not have helped either. The brain bleed has been stopped. But he’s slipped into a coma. Now it is up to his body. Even if he does recover there may be physiological problems to deal with. There are many things we don’t know about the humanoid brain. I once had a cousin who had a similar injury falling out of a tree. He recovered but started to have episodes. Where he was convinced everyone was out to hurt him. He fully recovered but it took a long time. I am afraid it’s now a game of wait and see.” Hendon said to Sheena and Peeters.

"OK doctor H, I will install him in the intensive care biobed, where we can monitor his condition 24/7. If something happens, I will be standby here in sick bay, while you get yourself settled. Thanks for the... intervention, muck appreciated!", Peeters said.

She turned to Sheena and tried to comfort her while guiding her and the lieutenant to the intensive care area. "Sheena, you look tired. Maybe some rest would do you good? Why don't you return to your quarters and try to get some sleep? If you want, I can give you something? The lieutenant is in good hands, I assure you!"

"I'm staying with him. Maybe I can reach him and maybe I can't but I want to try," Sheena said, picking up Ryan's hand and holding it.

Normally, she would have never let that slide but being on a starfleet vessel instead of in a hospital, made her realise some rules are more guidelines. "OK fine Sheena. There is a bed next to his. I advice you to take some rest. If you need something, just call me!"

Hendon looked around. As Chief Medical Officer he should of said something. After all Robert was in charge of Sickbay now. But he decided to turn a blind eye. Sheena wanted to be near her Imzardi so he kept quiet. No dougt Alice would do the same if he had been in Ryan’s place.

"Thank you Kimberly. You've been very kind", Sheena said. It was true that she was exhausted but her devotion to her intended kept her sitting there. Soon however, she started to fall asleep sitting there and reluctantly laid down on the bed next to Ryan.

Robert gestured to Peeters.

“Don’t worry I would of done the same thing. Any problems just tell them the new Chief Medical Officer said it was ok. However Sheena’s readings worry me. Best keep an eye on her and make sure she takes in fluids and nutrients. She needs to be strong for her husband to be. He is going to need her strength if or when he recovers.” Robert said.
