Mission:
Monsters of the Past
Location: Captain's Ready Room
Ryan waited for the room to clear, turning to Maia once they were the only two in the room. "Doctor Tolon has not been entirely forthcoming with us. Samantha discovered references to the harvesting of proto-matter for weapons research and development. There is also a reference to suspending something called the Omega Directive."
"It is a defense research station, they are supposed to develop and construct advanced anti-Borg/Dominion busting weapons.
I am not surprised that you don't know what the Omega directive is, it's highly classified. But you need to know so I will authorize and read you into the program as a specialist.
"The Omega Directive (denoted by Ω) is a highly classified Starfleet general order requiring the captain of a starship to notify Starfleet Command immediately upon detection of an Omega molecule.
The directive also authorized the use of any and all means to destroy an Omega molecule, superseding all other regulations including the Prime Directive. The Omega Directive was deemed necessary because of the extreme power and consequently catastrophic threat to interstellar civilizations posed by even a single molecule. Knowledge of the Omega molecule and the Omega Directive was restricted to starship captains and flag officers. Captains received subsequent training on how to deal with the issue; however, specialist teams were created to deal with any crisis." Maia stated.
Ryan listened to Maia as she explained the Omega Directive to him. He had never heard of it. It got him wondering how Samantha would know something about it when he did not. "I am not sure I understand."
Samantha stepped onto the bridge and walked straight to the Ready Room door and depressed the door open button just as Ryan spoke. She quickly stepped in to allow the doors to close. "I can explain some of it." She glanced at Maia. "Sorry for the interruption Captain, but under the circumstances."
Do come in Samantha. What can I do for you? Maia asked.
Samantha turned to Ryan, who still looked rather confused and concerned. "Omega molecules are able to be created with a substance called Boronite. I was doing research into the station when I came across a request for a substantial amount of said mineral. Five thousand metric tons of it I should say. Boronite has limited applications outside of weapons development and even then there are less...expensive materials that are much more practical to use." She gave a nod of her head in the general direction of the space station. "I don't know about all the weapons research going on, but I would hazard a guess that a great deal of it is probably illegal."
"Have you been able to detect any Omega particles I know the ship's computer would go crazy if there were any here. Don't forget that they have carte Blanche to investigate any and all weapons they want too, that's why we're in the middle of the nebula, a nebula with strange properties already due to the proto matter explosion of the genesis device." Maia replied.
Samantha shook her head. "No sensor evidence, but that much boronite...they could be storing it for later production if research into other weapons proves ineffective." She paused in deep concern. "What worries me is that most of what they may be researching is illegal weapons technology. Things that have been banned in numerous treaties the United Federation of Planets has agreed to over the last century or more."
Ryan nodded in agreement. "Samantha may be right on that account. Research into Genesis, subspace weapons, and evidently this Omega molecule, all of that is banned with good reason. We are going to have to shut it down."
"If we find Omega, we definitely will shut it down," Maia said.
"Is there anything else you wish to discuss?" Maia asked.
Samantha and Ryan looked at one another and shook their heads before turning to Maia. Ryan spoke for them both. "Not at this time Captain."
"Then You are both dismissed, though I do want you to keep an eye on Dr. Tolan, I don't know him well enough to trust him," Maia replied.
