Lieutenant JG Steve O'Carroll Personal Log Stardate 239507.29

It has been a week since I got my new legs. Dr Hendon seems pleased with my progress and I am getting stronger every day. The braces help and I am now using a walker. I feel like Frankenstein's monster walking around stiffly, the braces are doing there job and teaching me balance and coordination. At least I can go to the bathroom by myself now. I have been getting a lot of visitors especially Dr. Blake and Lieutenant Brannon. I look forward to there visits as they are helping me keep my spirits high. Something about a beautiful woman who cares that can lift any man's spirits. I can actually do an unweighted unassisted squat now. I think I'm a little taller than I was, but the doc says I'm the same height. Progress is good I'm feeling much better about my life now. Log out.

The first thing Robert had learnt about treating patients with injuries. That ended up with major limb replacement. Was to get them out of sickbay as quickly as possible. Once they were back in their comfort zones. The true healing could begin. No sooner had Steve started to walk without landing on his face or back. He was released from sickbay. That had been a week ago.

Steve had just finished another work out and was sweating but his legs were getting conditioned and so was he. He no longer lived in sickbay but was in his own quarters again. He still used the walker and was on very light duty. The consensus was his main duty was to get healthier and stronger. He was do in sickbay for another test so he got on his walker and make the long trek to sickbay. He liked walking and felt truly blessed that he lived in a day an age where things like this were possible. He was walking much less stiffly than just a few days ago.

He walked into Sickbay.

"Hello Doc, I'm here for another checkup." Steve said amiably.

Hendon nodded and ran a probe over Steves legs as he stood there.

" Well your new muscles have developed quite nicely. If I had not of been the one who sew them on. I would not know these legs were not given to you by your mother. How have you been balance wise?" Robert asked

"Better I think, getting better daily, I think I' ready top switch to the cane." Steve said.

Hendon rubbed his chin.

“ Yes. Yes maybe. I want you to stand on one leg. The right one for ten minutes then the left please. Also ten minutes without your arms outstretched please.”

Robert watched Steve’s upper body closely. He noticed a slight tremor when Steve stood on his right leg. But everything seemed fine with his left.

“ Right balance needs work left seems ok...... keep the right leg brance on but leave the left off. You can start walking with a cane. Have you picked one out yet?” Robert asked.

"Yes in anticipation I took the liberty of replicating one this morning." Steve said.

Hendon smiled.

“ Great but make sure it is the correct height. The last thing you need is a fall. I think today we’ll do some exercises with you walking with the cane.” Robert said.

"Okay what sort of exercises?" Steve asked.

Samantha had walked in just as Steve asked his question. She gave him a good once over before. "I might have an idea for an exercise once the Doctor here clears you for a cardiovascular workout."

"Hi Sam, good to see you. Whats your idea?

Samantha patted Steve's hand. "We'll talk more later."

"Lets be careful for now. We don't want to cause a relapse. Just some gentle slow walking for now." Hendon said.

"You're the Doc, Doc." O'caroll said smiling.

Sheena swung into sickbay skidding to a quick stop. "Doctor Hendon got anything for a headache? I got a whopper of one," she said looking at Samantha. "Hi Samantha, how you doing?" she said.

Samantha nodded. "Doing well, thought I would drop by and find out how Steve's recovery is going."

Headache Hendon did not like the sound of that.

"How much coffee have you been drinking?" Robert asked Sheena

"Hello Commander! Sorry to hear your not feeling well." Steve said.

"Don't drink the stuff Dr. Hendon. Prefer tea, herbal tea, no caffeine. Having to maintain so much information in my head plus the current situatiin at home does not help," Sheena said rubbing her temples.

Robert considered this. Tea.

“ Actually tea has just as much caffeine as coffee. Many people forget that and drink to much. Wondering why they can’t sleep. ” He said to Sheena

"Hello Steve, how are you feeling today?" Sheena asked him.

"I'm feeling much better, at least I don't feel like such a toddler anymore, Sir. Dr. Hendon did a fine job on my legs and its just a matter of time until I am at full strength and capability again." Steve replied.

Robert felt his face flush.

“ Actually it was all you all I did was build you a new pair.” Hendon said as he ran a probe over Sheena’s head and neck He checked the readings and pressed a hypo against the base of her neck.

“ You know at the academy they should teach cadets how to handle stress. This will help but avoid all types of tea for a few days. There are some fruit infusion alternatives you can try instead. My favourite is the lemon and mint.” Robert said.

"Lemon and mint? I love both and I will definitely try it. Turning to Steve, "That is good to hear Steve. I will be looking for you to be back at your soon. Get better soon Steve," Sheena said.

Robert turned back to Steve.

" Ok I want you to walk in a straight line with your arms outstretched please. Now take it nice and easy." He explained.

"Sounds like a sobriety test..Heh heh". Steve said jovially.

Steve put his arms out and was very mindful of his balance.

He took one step and then another but he was going pretty slow being careful. He could do it if he concentrated on his balance. His legs were strong enough but now was a test of fine motor functions. He walked five, then ten, then fifteen steps before he got to the wall.

"How's that, Doc"? Steve asked.

“ Excellent your doing very well.” Robert said. He pushed a chair towards Steve so he could sit down.

“ It’s fully up to you of course. But how do you feel about trying a run? Well use the treadmill of course. But it’s up to you.” Hendon asked.

"I'd be happy to try, Doc.." Steve said.

Hendon moved over to a treadmill. He started running a series of numbers through its control panel.

“ Ok. Now the treadmill has built in sensors. If it detects your going to fall a force field will come into effect and stop getting hurt. Now it’s set at gentle trot I don’t want to risk anything to fast just yet. If you feel any discomfort let me know at once.” He replied

"Looking good Steve" Sheena said, rubbing her temples. They hurt from keeping her mind shielded as long as she had.

Hendon could see that the strain on Toran was beginning to take its toll.

" Commander we may be able to help you. I could give you a neural stimulator to wear. It would help you block out any telepathic interference. Perhaps help reduce your headache as well." he said.

"No Doc, I can still deal with it as long as I get enough rest. If I need your help you will be the first one to know promise," Sheena said chuckling.

"You should hook her up to a sensor Doc to see if there is any external signal affecting her. She is telepathic after all. Steve said."

Robert slowly helped Steve onto the treadmill.

“ I am willing to give that a try. But it may not help as these telepath’s know how to mask their attacks. Plus the sensor will only pick up known interference. Whatever these guys are using is definitely not taught in any Betazoid school.” Robert said.

"Perhaps but if you hook it up to an enhanced spectral analyzer you might be able to determine the domain of there attacks if that is what it is, especially if you use multi modal reflection/refraction technology to analyze the scan. "

Steve got onto the treadmill and braced himself. then the treadmill started and he willed his legs to work and keep up.

Looking at Hendon, "If you think it would help," Sheena said, not sure herself as the pain was growing exponentially.

Robert nodded.

“ Let’s give it a try.” He gestured for her to lay down on the bio bed.

It happened without warning. As he put his hand out to pick up the enhanced spectral analyser. A pain in his head began to build. It was like the brain freeze you had. When you tried to eat to much ice cream. In one go. But as he removed his hand away it dulled. He tried again the pain returned even worse. He felt like his eye balls were about to pop out of his head.

“I I can’t dddoo” he said panting

"Can you tell me what to do Doc?" Steve asked.

"No, no, no.....your hurting him....please stop......you'll kill him! Let him alone!. I'm the one you want! Let him gooooo!" Sheena yelled and as she did her head exploded in pain. In her mind she heard the whispering again, "Yes you are the one we want", Sheena passed out from the pain.

Hendon tried again but the pain become worse. He was sure his brain was about to turn to liquid and ooze out his ears. He slowly sank to the floor and crawled away from her. The pain subsided as he moved towards Steve. Who he put an arm on shaking his head.

“ No…..they’ll hurt you to if you try to help her….we need to find the people doing this and stop them.” Hendon said recovering slowly.

"I know. Computer activate the Emergency Medical Hologram".

The EMH appeared.

"What is the nature of the medical emergency"? It asked.

"You tell me these two have doubled over in pain I believe it to be a telepathic attack." Steve said.

The EMH scanned them both then took a hypospray and injected them with it.

What did you give them? Steve asked.

"Lexorin it will deaden the telepathic receptors and bring them out of it." the EMH replied. "It's not a permanent cure but they should regain consciousness." The EMH added.

"Good can you scan the frequency of the telepathic attack wave?" Steve asked.

The EMH used the spectral analyzer and found 12 frequencies in an upper domain similar to that of a transporter beam.

"Can we adjust the shields to prevent those frequencies from hurting us?" Steve asked.

"I'm a doctor not an engineer, but yes, I believe we can. We can do it by sending a low level multi-phasic pulse through the shield grid to act as a scattering field. It should neutralize any telepathic influence." The EMH said.

"EMH please notify the bridge and especially Captain Sterling and Dr Blake of your findings." Steve requested before passing out himself." Steve said dropping in pain.

Slowly very slowly the pain in Robert’s head began to dull. Not completely but enough for him to open his eyes. He saw a medical officer standing before him. It took Hendon a few seconds to realise it was the EMH.
The EMH!!!

“ EMH …… who. Activated.You.” He said slowly.

"He did before he passed out" The EMH pointed at Steve.

Robert made a mental note that if he was still alive. To send the creator of the EMH system a big thank you.

The EMH moved to Steve and ran a tricorder over him and prepared a dose of Lexorin for him too. It then administered it.

Steve started to slowly come around..

"Huh? What happened." Steve asked.

"Ohhh.....my head......who found the off button?" Sheena said, rubbing her still pounding head. "Feels like a twenty ton starship ran me over," she added.

"Yes apparently you were under a sever telepathic or psionic attack. Your neurotransmitter levels were 400 percent above normal. I gave you Lexorin to take the edge off. It's not a permanent fix, but it will help you to function. The EMH replied.

“ Good thinking. It seems that we all are not immune to these attacks. I think it would be prudent to keep you running for now. Until this crisis is over.” Hendon told the EMH.

"I agree. I will be useful to you Doctor." The EMH said.

Hendon gestured for the EMH to follow him. Once they were away from the others Robert spoke.

“ Also I need you to keep a watchful eye on me. If the Lexorin starts to wear off. These people could take control of me and get me to give someone an overdose. If you have to knock me out. Is that understood.” Hendon said.

"Understood." The EMH replied.

Steve got slowly to his feet.

'Geez I feel like I have a hangover. Somebody stop the guy in the bulldozer whose running over my brain, You guy feeling better?" Steve said.

"It will pass, quickly." the EMH said.
