Applying For A Permanent Position

Posted on Sun Jun 27th, 2021 @ 11:33am by Captain Maia Sterling & Lieutenant Commander Havri Belbre & Lieutenant JG Samantha Blake, Ph.D

Mission: The Thorion Conundrum Mission Brief
Location: Captain's Ready Room

Samantha took a deep breath as she stepped out of the turbolift onto the bridge. She spotted the officer sitting in the center seat and felt a sense of relief. She walked up to Cale, a look of determination on her face. "Lieutenant Llewellyn, I was hoping I could have a private word with you and the Captain."

"Of course, Dr Blake. What is the nature of this 'private word'? he asked very curious.

Samantha looked about the bridge at the officers and crew before settling her eyes back on Cale. "Well, it wouldn't be private if I spoke about it here." She pointed to the Ready Room door. "The computer said Captain Sterling is in there. I was just hoping to get a few minutes with both of you to discuss a professional matter."

"I'm just holding the command officers place while they are elsewhere, Dr," Lieutenant Llewellyn replied. "Captain Sterling, to the bridge, please. Hopefully her arrival will be swift."

Samantha looked about the bridge. It was actually her first time there and she was impressed.

=/\= Already on my way =/\= Maia stated.

When the turbo lift doors opened Captain Sterling strode onto the bridge.

"Status report" the Captain asked Lt Llewellyn

"Everything's 5x5, Captain. Nothing to worry about," Lieutenant Llewellyn said as he sat comfortably in the center seat as if he was born to it. His face was bright and happy as anyone on board had ever seen it.

"Good then why did you call me Mr Llewellyn?" Maia asked.

"Dr Blake wished to speak to the both of us, Captain. In private, I might add. Very hush hush," Llewellyn whispered in his best James Bond accent.

"Very well lets step into my ready room then." The Captain said.

"Lt Brannon you have the con" Maia said.

Maia then led the pair into her ready room and took her seat.

"So what can I do for you Miss Blake"? Maia asked.

Brannon replied, "Aye Captain" and took the center seat.

Samantha followed the pair into ready room. She had prepared a good speech and suddenly couldn't remember it. She simply burst out. "I don't want to leave the Leto."

"No one is asking you to leave the Leto, Ms. Blake." Maia replied.

Samantha took a deep breath and released it in a long sigh. "The Science Council will be soon. I was only supposed to be on the Leto for the duration of the Thorion mission, to do the geological survey on Thorion III." Her face made a slight twitch as she spoke of Thorion III. "I couldn't even get that done before...." Her words trailed off, not wanting to think of the fire fight and subsequent captivity.

"What are we talking about here? A rank or just a desire to remain with us past your appointment to the ship or both?" Cale queried.

Samantha glanced at Cale with a shake of her head. "Me...serving in Starfleet? No. The Leto is in need of a geologist, plus...," she shifted her gaze to Maia, "you're also short an archeologist. I have a graduate degree in that field as well. I think a request from you to the Science Council would make my temporary assignment a permanent one. If you'll have me." She glanced back to Cale. "If you'll both have me."

"I can do my best with the Science Council as we're not on the best of terms. But with all the work I've done for them over the years, I should be able to get a good answer out of them. Captain?" Cale looked towards his new CO.

"You're welcome to stay as far as I'm concerned, Ms. Blake." Captain sterling said.

"How would you want to be compensated for your work?" Maia continued.

Samantha shrugged her shoulders. "I wouldn't mind single occupancy quarters and a seat in the officers ward room. The Federation Science Council would still be my employer and foot the bill for my lodging and food."

"So be it I can make you and acting Lieutenant Junior Grade". Maia stated.

"Will there be anything else?" Maia asked.

"Just one, the whole Acting thing. I don't have to wear one of those do I?" She pointed to Cale's Sciences Blue uniform.

"No but I would recommend that you wear a blue coat like a doctor which is what you are. You are a civilian but you will have the authority and responsibilities of a deputy Chief Science Officer. Of course if you want to wear a uniform that can be arranged, but you would have to earn it." Maia replied.
