Nicholas DeMarco stood up on the stage singing a ballad as a band behind him played Old Earth Soft Jazz. Every word of the lyrics seemed to resonate throughout the empty lounge. He was about halfway into his set when the doors opened and a rather lovely blonde, at least in Nick's opinion, entered.
Maia came in and took a table ordering an Appletini.
Nick continued singing a few more bars before calling a stop to the rehearsal. He looked at horn player for a moment and shook his head. "Your E sharp sounds more like an E flat buddy boy." He waived at all the musicians. "Take five and then we'll see if we can get it right." He stepped off the stage and over to the table Maia was at. He gestured at the empty chair across from her. "May I?"
"Please do, what are you drinking tonight?" Maia asked.
Nick took a seat across from Maia as a waitress brought over a tumbler filled with amber liquid. He took the glass and held it aloft. "Whiskey, neat."
"What kind of Whiskey", The Waitress asked.
Maia looked at the the man with an amused expression on her face.
Nick took a long pull. "Ah, the wonderful taste of Jamieson Irish Whiskey." He nodded to the waitress with a jovial grin before turning back to Maia. "Lynn likes to switch up what she serves me to see if I can tell the difference in taste."
"I can certainly tell, big difference between Terran whiskeys. Irish whiskey, Canadian whiskey, even Scotch whiskey tastes completely different".
Maia said.
Nick gave a nod of his head towards the bar. "Staff and I made a bet. As long as I can positively identify the specific brand of whiskey, I get the drink for free. If I can't, I pay double, not including the gratuity."
"You look like a man who over tips.." Maia said.
Nick made a slight grunting noise. "You're quite the perceptive one Captain." He took a sip of his drink. "So, what brings a lady like you to a two bit dive like this?"
"Ha, there are no two bit dives on the Leto. This is a classy place and I'm a classy broad." Maia replied.
Nick nodded his head. "You most certainly are my dear Captain."
"So what's your job around here besides seduce the captain?" Maia asked.
Nick chuckled at Maia's question. He gestured at the stage. "Well, I hope that my talents will serve to entertain your fine crew. As for the seducing, I get the feeling you are one that goes for someone more than a lounge lizard with a silvery voice and a penchant for fine whiskey. "
"Actually its been years since I've been on anything as innocuous as a date. I'm more or less married to my job. What about you, got a significant other?" Maia asked.
Nick shook his head. "Been quite some time since I had a significant relationship." He paused to take a sip of his drink before continuing. "I do however set the mood for visitors to lounge to...shall we say...delve into the finer aspects of romance."
"Your job sounds very nuanced. Tell me, can you sing?" Maia asked
"I guess you can decide for yourself Captain." Nick tossed back the last of his drink and rose to his feet. He motioned for the band to resume their positions for the rehearsal. A moment later his voice rang out across the lounge.
Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like on
A-Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby, kiss me
Fill my heart with song and let me sing forevermore
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you
Fill my heart with song
Let me sing forevermore
You are all I long for, all I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words
In other words
I love you
Nick glanced at Maia after the song, a curious expression on his face as to her judgement of his singing ability.
"Thank you, I've always loved that song. Looks to me you have no worries about keeping your job Nick". Maia said sipping her cocktail.
"You know Christmas is coming up soon do you do duets"? The Captain asked.
"I have. Got anyone in mind?" Nick held a curious expression.
"I always liked that song 'Santa Baby'. Its nearly the season for it anyway.
it goes something like this.
Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree, for me
I've been an awful good girl
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa baby, an out-of-space convertible too, light blue
I'll wait up for you dear
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Think of all the fun I've missed
Think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed
Next year I could be oh so good
If you'd check off my Christmas list
Boo doo bee doo
Santa honey, I wanna yacht and really that's
Not a lot
I've been an angel all year
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa cutie, there's one thing I really do need, the deed
To a platinum mine
Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa baby, I'm filling my stocking with a duplex, and checks
Sign your 'x' on the line
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Come and trim my Christmas tree
With some decorations bought at Tiffany's
I really do believe in you
Let's see if you believe in me
Boo doo bee doo
Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing, a ring
I don't mean a phone
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry down the chimney tonight"
Maia smiled finishing the song.
Nick nodded approvingly. "You are indeed a woman of many talents dear Captain." He stepped down from the stage. "I would love to perform a duet with you, especially if you are planning on having a Christmas party aboard the ship."
"Well I'm hardly a cruise director but I am always up for some fun." Mais said..
Nick gave Maia one of his most disarmingly charming smiles and a mischievous winks. "In that case, I guess we're having a holiday party. I'll talk to some of senior personnel and see if we can't get one put together in time. Just get back with me in a day or so to figure out what song we should do for the duet."
"How about its cold outside, that's a nice duet and a classic to boot." Maia said.
