The new Chief Engineer Meets the Captain
Posted on Tue Oct 13th, 2020 @ 4:44pm by Captain Maia Sterling
Mission:
The Thorion Conundrum Mission Brief
Location: Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: After meeting Blake, before going onto the station promenade
[On]
The newly minted Lieutenant, Jamie Dougherty, had just finished meeting with one of her colleagues, Lieutenant Ryan Blake, who seemed nice enough, and might be fun to hang out with after duty shift ended. The engineer tapped the button to turn off her PADD and walked out of her office in engineering. oO Time to meet the captain Oo she said to herself.
She almost bumped into an ensign on the way, a purple-skinned woman with a cute voice and dark purple hair.
"Sorry ensign," she said with a smile.
"It was my fault, Lieutenant...ma'am...sir..." she said, with the kind of seriousness a child would muster, pretending to be in the military.
"I'm not really a sir, as you can see," she said with a smile, gesturing to herself sadly. "Just keep the ma'am to crunch time and we'll be fine. I'm meeting the captain but report back to me what we need to fix in two hours!"
----
Up on the bridge, Jamie straightened her tunic and zipped her jacket and rang the chime for the captain's ready room. She tied her giant mass of red, curly hair (https://i.ytimg.com/vi/YeYW8TIWLG8/maxresdefault.jpg) that reached down to her waist with a hair tie, which helped, but it was hard to control for any length of time.
"Enter"
As she entered she approached the desk, and snapped to attention, one of the few times she did, and saluted, "Lieutenant Jamie Doughery, reporting for duty, ma'am."
Maia stood and returned Jamie's salute.
"At ease Lieutenant, Welcome to the the starship Leto". Maia said extending her hand.
Jamie took the proffered hand and smiled. "Thank you, Captain. I trust my transfer orders came through all right?"
"Yes they did." Maia said.
"I know we're still docked, and I just got my things on board before heading to engineering and up here," Jamie explained. "Can you let me know what all is on your list so I can get your ship ready to sail?"
"We are still waiting on key personnel to report aboard, we are scheduled to launch by next Tuesday. Our orders are to establish a Federation embassy on Thorion-4 at the request of their government and the Federation council. Tell me how much experience have you had as an engineer?". Maia asked.
"I've had about two years formal in-fleet experience, both on a starbase repairing various ships that docked, and some time on the USS Alicorn and USS Utopia before coming here," Jamie replied. "I specialized in warp theory, but had enough time to learn a few interstellar languages at the Academy. I grew up with my parents in Georgia and we worked raising barns and fixing neighbors' fences and tractors, herding cattle, tending fields, and keeping the peace between Montezuma and Doerun. I guess you could call that 'field experience'."
The Chief Engineering Officer, simply Chief Engineer, or Ship's Chief Engineer (SCE), is responsible for the repair and maintenance of all systems of starships or stations. The chief engineering officer, also known as the chief engineer or the engineering officer, was the officer in charge of all engineers and engineering-related duties aboard a vessel. The chief engineer's duties ranged from making the duty shift roster for engineering personnel to advising the captain on possible solutions for certain technical problems.
"Do you feel you are up to this, Lt Dougherty?" Maia asked.
"Yes ma'am," she said with a nod. "I'll get started on shifts right away and get everything in shape for us to ship out."
"Its been a pleasure meeting you I know you have a lot of work to do, Welcome aboard."
"Thank you captain. I look forward to working with you," Jamie said with a smile, as she saluted and left.
