Emergency!!

Posted on Wed Jan 24th, 2024 @ 2:29pm by Lieutenant Paisley P'Rar

Mission: Shore Leave
Location: MedBay
Timeline: Shore Leave, Day 2

On:

Shore Leave was one of Paisley's favorite activities. Even though she was a bit older, thirty-two, it was still a bit of a party time for the otherwise serious Carjoran. She was smart, and usually kept to herself, but shore leave was an EXCELLENT time to cut loose. And she'd spent the first day drinking too much and eating a LOT of junk. She'd also met someone that evening-which had jogged her memory that she'd gotten lax on her birth control and now?! She was in crises mode, hoping the Doc had an opening, or else there was going to be a half CarJoran, half Romulan baby running around the Leto in five months' time. She rang the chime to the waiting room.

"Lt. P'Rar. Do you have a free appointment, Doc? It's kind of an emergency!!"

His father in law was making good progress. But Alice his wife could not return to the Leto just yet.Hendon understood of course unlike himself Alice did not have a load of siblings to take over. It was just her and a brother who was not on speaking terms with their father. So once again he was on his own.

Robert had been going over some crew health files when he heard Paisley and looked around from his terminal.

“ Come in come in what’s wrong Paisley?” He asked.

"Uh...I ran out of birth control a bit ago and I need help. I've been not well and I think...could I be showing signs of pregnancy this fast?!" She asked, in a slightly panicked voice. "I was out the first night of shore leave, and had one too many Kanars and the Romulan I met was...good looking and smart, and...well." She trailed off. "And if I am...will it be more of Bajoran pregnancy, or a Cardassian one?! Like...will I only have to be pregnant for 5 months? Or...shoot. I don't know how to navigate this." She sighed deeply.

Robert gestured for her to lay on a bio bed. Then he activated it and two panels encased her torso. He started to take readings and shook his head.

“ Ok. Well with your Cardassian and Bajorian physiology, you would need a little bit of internal tinkering first before getting pregnant from a handsome Romulan. But it is a very possible thing to happen but not today. Although there is something going on with you digestive system. Do you feel any pains in your mid section at all?” Hendon asked.

She let out a sigh-of both relief and embarrassment. "Thank the Prophets. But yes, and I vomited this morning." She said. "That's why I thought...but that would be awfully soon. I am a scientist, and I understand my own biology, but who knows what Romulans do?" She chuckled. "Thank you, Doc. Say, is your family finally coming aboard?" She asked. She remembered that they had discussed it once.

Robert gave a sigh.

“ Sadly no. Although my father in-law is much better. He still is not over the illness so she is staying on for a bit longer. We need a full rundown of what you have consumed since the Leto docked. Your unique physiology processes food at a much slower rate than say a human. So anything from the last few days could have built up in your system and set this off.” Hendon replied.

Oh no. This was maybe WORSE than a pregnancy scare. She thought for a minute. "I don't remember everything, but I eat a LOT and I like food. Let's see. The first meal I've had not from the Replimat or mess hall was from the Cafe on the Promenade. I had a Reuben sandwich, Cole slaw, and fries," she said, "and lemonade. I don't drink a lot of alcohol. The next day, I had Regova eggs Benedict from the same cafe, about fifteen coffees-that's my biggest vice-and I KNOW I should cut back, but sheesh. A girl needs something!! Then, I had both other meals on the ship because I had watch. Yesterday was in reverse-Breakfast and lunch here on the boat, and then I went out. I had two Andorian sunrises, and....oh!! I don't think I ate anything. That may be it?!" She said. Dumb idea. "I was just really into Povis..." she explained. "And nothing since except some Jumja tea and a small bite of some crackers because I was feeling nauseous." She stopped. She was certain that was her diet the past few days. Normally, she ate mostly vegetarian meals, a lot of salads and things, but on shore leave, she went a bit wild.

Hendon gave a small grin.

“ Then we have what we need. It was the Cole slaw you had with your Reuben sandwich. We’ve only just had a warning from our hosts. They had to switch suppliers due to a big falling out. But it seems the quality of some of the vegetables is a lot to be desired. That Cafe on the Promenade is one who used the new supplier. We need to decrease you stomach acid levels nurse if you please.” Hendon said. He stood back and continued to monitor her readings.

Ugh. Figures. Last time she ever eats Terran food. Jerks.

A nurse came over and began pressing controls on the panel that were over Paisley’s chest.

“ This is going to feel uncomfortable. So if you have a happy place I’d go there now in your head.” The nurse said.

Paisley sighed. "Ok, thanks," she said. She closed her eyes, and thought of her mother. Sure enough, she felt the immediate sensation, and let out a breath. "Yeah, that does not feel good!" What was happening? She felt like someone was driving a screwdriver into her abdomen.

“ You have severe food poisoning which has caused damage to your intestinal tracts friendly bacteria. We are purging it free of all bacteria, once that is done we will then reintroduce more. This should reboot your digestive system, the discomfort you are feeling is normal. Just to warn you there will be a significant amount of flatulence in a few moments. This is your body purging the bad bacteria.” Hendon said.

Paisly nodded. "Ok...I can handle that," she said. Oh, no, how embarrassing! She sighed. "Damn the cafe!!" She said.
Sure enough, the flatulence started, and all she could do was close her eyes.. "Sorry!!" She couldn't help but apologize!

“ Do not worry it’s a natural process. Plus it shows that the treatment is working. I would have been more worried if it had not happened. However what concerns me is this Cole Slaw is being consumed all over the Mall. No one bothered to check it was cleared from quarantine. Anyway that’s for Starfleet to investigate. Meanwhile let’s get you back to 100% you may start to have a bitter taste in your mouth. Here drink this water it will help.” Hendon said

Paisley made a face. "Oh, no. I will ensure a total lockdown of it is issued by my department," she said. As the Chief Science Officer, she had that kind of permission. "Thank you," she said, taking the water. Indeed, it tasted terribly. "I am glad your father in law is doing better. It's too bad that they can't join you. That must be difficult." Her stomach still hurt and she was speaking slowly from the uncomfortable feeling.

“ Yes. Funny thing is I miss hearing the kids arguing all the time. Plus the way they try to get back at each other. I remember once when Petra altered the power of the naughty corners force field. Tom was trapped there for over an hour. When he got out he threw her toys out the window. Happy times. What you? Do you have any siblings?” Hendon asked

Paisley shook her head. "No...my brother died the day after he was born. Lack of oxygen to his brain. My mother died birthing him," she said, her voice tense. "My mother was...a Bajoran comfort woman, and...she was really too young, in hindsight. Just 19 when she had me. Had only turned 20 when Yeicet was born," she explained, breathing heavily through the discomfort. "It's just me, and my father. I had a step-sister for a while. Human. Our parents were only married for a short time," she said. "Your children sound fun." She said. When was this going to end?!

Robert could tell she was in discomfort so he pressed a hypo spray in her arm.

“ The symptoms and discomfort should die down in the next few minutes. Yes Tom and Petra can be fun……when they’re not trying to turn themselves into an only child. My last vision of them was an impromptu food fight they had. Then of course there was the ice cream incident….” He said

She nodded. "Thank you. It IS helping the stomach distress," she said. "I remember you told me!! I would have liked that," she said. "But now I am glad, sort of. It's mostly just me-my father and I don't talk much-and so I don't have to worry that my choices impact someone else. Just me." She said. There was a comfort in that. "Though he IS supposed to remarry. Again. Shortly. Another Human," Paisley said, her voice more steady now from the pain relief. "This will be his...sixth wife. I think he should just quit while he's ahead, but he says it's better for his career." She shrugged.

“ Do you think that the fact your father is marrying for the sixth time , may be at the root of your problem?” Hendon asked.

Paisley made a face. "It could be. But I see the counselor about my past regularly, so I think she would've warned me? I don't know, Doc. I try to not let my father's decisions impact my life anymore. We barely talk, so that usually doesn't happen anyway." She shared. "I think it's more or less...lonliness. I am still fairly new, and because of my work, I haven't had a lot of time to meet people yet," she said.

“ Well unfortunately I don’t have any pill or medicine to help you there. But the Leto does have a few after shift clubs you could join. I myself have been trying to learn 3D chess while my family is on Earth. Quite difficult really it’s mostly mathematical really. I belong to one of the non Vulcan clubs. But there are other pursuits you could try , it is a great way to meet people and make friends.” Robert said.

Paisley considered this for a moment. "Hmm. Maybe I will look into that. Maybe not chess, though. I am the Science chief. My brain does enough math in one day," she said. "But if there's something maybe art or athletic based, I could do that. Are those sorts of things posted in the Officers Lounge?" She asked. Ship duty was so different from Starbase duty.

“ Yes I believe so. Well that’s you all done. If you need any help getting into one of those clubs tell them I sent you.” Robert said.
