Regularly scheduled checkup

Mission:
The Thorion Conundrum Mission Brief
Location: Sickbay
After leaving his meeting with the Commander, Steve made his way down to sickbay. After the official check in with the commanding officer, his next step was to check in and get his shipboard checkup with the ship’s doctor. He did not mind the checkups but living most of his life from ship to ship, he knew it as a normal part of life. He would be serving with the new doctor for the foreseeable future, so he wanted to make the best impression he could.
He walked into sickbay and looked around. “Dr. Laith?”
Doctor Laith and Sylestia were across the sickbay; Sylestia laying on one of the secondary biobeds. They ‘female’ Thyla did not appear to be injured externally but was laying perfectly still on her side and trying not to move. Her mother was working with an engineering tricorder.
“Come in, and please, call me Doctor Tamara,” Doctor Laith requested. S/he looked over at the officer and offered them a warm smile and a casual-happy tail wag. “What can I do for you?”
He returned the smile. “Sorry to bother you Doctor Tamara, I’m Lieutenant Steve O’Carroll. My shuttle got in a little early and thought I would try to beat the rush of new crew getting their new transfer physical.” He looked up. “If now is not a good time I would be fine to schedule a time instead of just dropping in.”
Tamara rose and circled the desk. “Welcome Lieutenant O’Carroll.” S/he wanted to greet the new officer with a hug, but s/he thought s/he’d get a better feel for him first; after all not all species were big huggers like those from hir system. “Sickbay is dead right now anyway; we haven’t gotten underway yet. Do you have your transfer PADD, or would you like me to send for your medical transcripts later?” S/he showed him over to the main-central biobed. “How was your trip?”
Steve followed hir to the bed. “Oh yes, right, I have it right here.” He said and fished the PADD from his front pocket and offered it. “My trip was actually very smooth and ahead of schedule. Thank you. Still, glad to be at my new home. How long have you been here Doctor?”
The doctor accepted the PADD with a warm smile. S/he skimmed it briefly, hir primary concern with it was the section on vaccine and inoculation history. S/he noticed he’d need some boosters, as well as some new ones. “Actually. As far as I’m aware, this is a completely new posting. I’ve only been aboard less than 24-hours. (Lay down please.)”
“Then I guess I really did beat the crowds” Steve said.
Steve got up on the bio bed and laid down.
“Ready when you are doc.” Steve said.
The fur on Doctor Tamara’s neck stood on end. S/he tried to hide a cringe. S/he’d always tried to hide a secret disdain for the shorthand ‘doc’, s/he’d always thought it felt a little too familiar to hir. Especially for someone s/he only just met.
The doctor smiled warmly, instead, hir eyes bright. “Thank you, I’d like to close the surgical arc around you, would you like me to show you where the emergency release is, in case you have any issues?”
“Yes please.” Steve replied, though he had never been afraid before it was good to know.”
Tamara pulled out a small control from its compartment tucked in the edge of the biobed and folded it gently in his right hand with a smile. The ovular object had a huge old-style, mechanical red button on it with small words printed on it reading ‘in case of emergency’.
The doctor activated the arc and it began to close around hir patient. “Rest easy Lieutenant, I haven’t as-yet had any patient ever need to use that.”
Steve chuckled.
Steve laid back and rested comfortably, well as comfortably as anyone could in a doctor’s examination room.
The surgical arc closed around the lieutenant and Doctor Laith stood over it to input some commands. Slowly a peaceful blue scanning beam activated and began its cycles. “How is it so far? Some people report the scanning beam tickles, but so far none of those have been humans, nonetheless, please try and remain still.” Tamara smiled, “this won’t hurt a bit.” s/he joked.
“It does sort of tickle; kind of like a cool breeze blowing over one’s skin.” Steve replied.
Doctor Tamara was surprised. S/he briefed through the officer’s family history, but s/he couldn’t find any mention of any mixture of non-Terran DNA. “Really? Has there ever been any previous indication you or other family members have displayed a hypersensitivity to the scan before?
“I don’t believe so, but I’ve always been extremely ticklish. I do have an irritating rash on my belly and back.” Steve replied.
Steve sighed.
“Look doc are we almost done I have a lot to do.” Steve added.
“Thank you for being so generous with your time Lieutenant, I’m sure you understand the importance of this. The scan cycle ha-” Just then the cycle finished with a beep and retracted. Doctor Tamara took a preliminary glace at the results. S/he found to hir amazement that O’Carroll hadn’t needed any updates on his booster shots. “I’ll need to go over these results in more detail later, but a cursory glance looks like everything should be good. You may return to duty. I’ll give you a call if I need to discuss anything.”
"Thanks Doc." Steve said.
