Meeting the Doctor

Posted on Mon Aug 30th, 2021 @ 12:52am by Lieutenant Commander Robert Hendon

Mission: The Thorion Conundrum Mission Brief
Location: Sickbay

ON:-

-Sickbay-

After he had left the Counselor's Office, he made his way over to Sickbay and since they were on the same deck, he didn't have far to go. So, he walked along the corridor admiring the craftsmanship of this vessel. The door to Sickbay was obvious as it was marked with a caduceus. Most likely at the request of the Chief Medical Officer.

He walked in and asked to see him.

Hendon watched the view screen as the two children pushed each other. So their face was the only one on the screen.

"=/\= I wanna see him! =/\="Shouted Tom

"=/\= No me!=/\=" Screamed Petra

Boris heard someone walking up behind him. So he quickly cleared the screen and turned around.

" Hello how may I help you?" Hendon asked

"Dr Hendon, I suppose? I'm Lieutenant Cale Llewellyn, new Chief Science Officer, here for his physical," Lieutenant Llewellyn said.

Hendon stood and extended his hand.

" Welcome to sickbay. If you would like to follow me we will get started. Do you have anything outstanding that we would need to know before we begin?" Robert asked with a polite smile.

"Well to be perfectily honest, Dr, I'm empathic. This means I can feel others' emotions. I've studied at the Cataria Institute on Betazed and on Vulcan with several of the masters of <>i>kolinahr, who have told me that I must control my own emotions in order to keep my psychic shields up.

"I also suffer from migraines from this 'ability' A doctor friend of mine name Michael Ki told me that if I had a true teacher on board that according to the last neurological scans he took, I could become a full telepath. But, he also told me it would be extremely dangerous for me.

"Other than that, I'm in perfect health but, I suspect that you will want to determine that for yourself, now?" Cale said by way of a question knowing how medical doctors were.

Hendon nodded and pressed a control on the bio bed.

" Yes obviously. So you suffer from migraines interesting. Hmmm..... your blood pressure is a little high interesting. Plus your temperature is slightly high...otherwise your readings are encouraging. I agree with Doctor Ki your neutral pathways could be compromised if you chose to become a full telepath. You know it may be a good idea to visit Betazed. They have some techniques that may help with the migraines." He explained.

"Well thank you, Doctor. He told me that my neural pathways had been restructured, as well," Cale mentioned. "You can read exactly what he read in my medical file, which should have been transmitted from Starfleet Medical."

Starfleet Medical was renowned for its love of red tape. By the time the report arrived Tom and Petra would be in their teens.

" Once the report arrives. But as you know our friends at Starfleet Medical just love their mountains of red tape. My five year olds will both be teens before the report arrives. How bad are the migraines?" He asked

"Yessir, I'm fully aware of any organization's desire to use as much red tape as possible. Now as for the migraines. Most times, they're controllable. But other times, they're almost intolerable. Those are the days I just want to crawl under my bed and die," Cale said with a slight laugh. "But, those are only on my first few days on a new ship."

" You should not be getting them at all. Problem is it is all connected to your neural ability. Because of the mission there is no time to do a full diagnostic of your brain abilities. I will give you a hypo to help with the migraines. Use only when you have one." Hendon explained.

"That works for me, Dr. I'm used to them by now," Cale said.

Robert checked over Cale's weight. It looked normal another idea crossed his mind.

" I wish there was more we could do for you. What's your diet like?" He asked

"I never gave it much thought but, it's not other than what you would expect for your average Starfleet cadet or officer," Cale said. "What's your thinking, Doctor?"

Robert remembered once reading some historical medical journals. One had been on diet and its effect on light to medium brain disorders like headaches and migraines.

" I once read an historical medical journal concerning diet and migraines. I know it was published back in the late 20th century. But there may be something in it that could help you now. How much coffee do you drink?" He asked.

"Truthfully, I'm an hot chocolate person, myself. With either French Vanilla or Irish Creme creamer in it. And around December, I'll even use Peppermint," Cale smiled.

Hendon clicked his fingers.

“ Chocolate that’s it! Chocolate in any form is a known trigger for migraines. How much have you been drinking?”

“2 times a day, like most coffee drinkers, I suppose," he replied. "Please don't make me give up my chocolate."

Hendon looked at him.

“ You have a choice migraine or chocolate. But if you are that desperate for your chocolate hit. Then once a week.” Hendon said

"O, the great Oz has spoken. No more hot chocolate," and Cale laughed for the first time since joining the crew. "Oh, one more thing. Do we have a vet on board?"

Robert looked at Cale.

" Who?" He asked

"You know a doctor that takes care of 'lower 'animals?" Cale answered, despising the term.

Roberts parents had advised him to take up a number of subjects. Just in case he could not get in to one. Being born with a photographic memory certainly helped. As it happened Robert was also a vetanarian surgeon.

" Actually I am a qualified vet. My parents insisted I study a backup subject and having a photograph memory helped. So it's not only humanoids and other alien forms I can help. We can also cure everything from a sick Tribble to a Jackal Targ with a upset tummy." Robert said

"Brilliant! Then when my duties permit, I will bring Dino and Mino to meet you! Now, was there anything else, Dr?" he asked eager to get to his duties.

Hendon looked round.

“ Dino and Mino?” He asked
