Mission: The Thorion Conundrum Mission Brief
Location: Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: Current

[ON]

Jimmy had switched from his combat dress to his duty uniform. Thrown on some aqua velva after shave and made sure he was presentable. He had spent the past few years fighting Guls, Legates, Glins and Jem Hadar it felt good to not have to be in a constant state of alert. But it was time to check in with authority. This was a new post. That meant a new captain.

oO I hope this is quick I want some real food. Oo

He chimed on the Captains door.

Maia was working on commendations for the crew along with Commander Sheena Toran and Commander Ryan Blake her command staff.

There were so many to go through so many heroic actions and dazzling displays of courage under fire. Maia was proud of her entire crew.

"I was just informed that we have a replacement for Captain Thrix." He should be arriving soon. Maia told her staff.

Command didn't want me to promote Lieutenant Somers as she is a bit inexperienced. Though she does great work so far, and is a really superb at small unit tactics." Maia continued.

"Yes she is. From what was reported to me was that she did her job on the mission and was very successful in the retrieval of our people.

Ryan couldn't argue with Maia's assessment of Somers. The Marine Lieutenant had rescued nearly all the members of his away team. He wanted to meet her soon and convey his thanks for rescuing his sister.

It was then she heard the chime.

"Enter" she called.

Captain Gorbets entered he stared at the captain in almost awe for a moment, then shook his head. He stood at full attention and in a rather soft spoken voice he said, "Captain Gorbets of the 95th Rifle Company reporting as ordered. Here is the transfer papers..Sir.. Ma'am?"

He gave a look to the other officers and said, "Sirs, It's an honor to be here."

"Ah Mr Gorbets I've been expecting you do come in. May I present the first officer Lt Commander Sheena Toran, and my Second Officer and chief of Strategic Operations Lieutenant Ryan Blake", the Captain stated.

Ryan walked over and offered his hand to James. "Welcome aboard Captain."

Gorbets offered his hand, "Sir, thank you sir. I look forward to working with you."

Ryan shook James' hand firmly. "And I with you."

"We all do Mr. Gorbets we've been without an MCO for several months when Captain Thrix was transferred to the Thorion-4 Embassy. Lieutenant Karyn Somers has done a great job, but she was recently commissioned a Second Lieutenant and wasn't ready to command a company of Marines, though she is one of the best officers I have worked with in small unit tactics. Her day will come. Please tell us about yourself. You seem to have caught us at the right time." Captain Sterling stated.

"Sirs, General Blane and Admiral Sheppard asked me to take the post after Omega Theta had pulled their points in Colonial Defense. I have spent the past few years regular infantry, I am not special forces, my squad was not. We did door knocks and disarmed Cardassian and Human settlers in what was the DMZ and now the Free Cardassian and Federation Zone. This is the first time in almost six years I have not been shot at or had to disarm an angry populace." He adjusted himself in the chair he sat in.

"As for the Second Lieutenant, if she is going to be my second I want her to have more authority, so with permission I want to brevet her to first louie. Give her six months and if it sticks make it permanent. Her actions with the Orion situation I think warrant it. As for myself personally I am an a man who looks at a person as a whole never what's in a file. Files are written by autocrats, doctors and counselors. Spend time with a person and you figure them out, best that way."

Ryan's eyes widen. 'Guys definitely got cajones. I'll give him that,' he thought to himself. He looked at Maia for her reaction.

Sheena's eyebrow went up as she picked up on Ryan's thought. "First off Captain Gorebets, welcome aboard. It is a pleasure to meet you. You are, and please excuse my bluntness, but, you seem to be indirectly demanding that the captain promote 2nd Lt. Somers to 1st Lt. That is a bit bold of you sir. However, I think Captain Sterling will take your request under advisement........", Sheena said extending her hand to the Marine Captain.

Maia smiled she liked Captain Gorebets immediately.

"Actually Mr. Gorebets your company is yours. She has been informed that she will be your executive officer. 2Lt Somers is on the fast track, however she was only commissioned a month ago. She doesn't meet the time in grade requirements just yet. I would ask that you become her mentor and teach her what it means to be an officer of Marines. I myself am a White Corded member of the 95 Marine Rifle Regiment. I would be happy to discuss Ms. Somers promotion with you in six months. Have you met her?" The Captain asked.

oOThey are doing this dog and pony show why? See what they can get away with or exhert dominance, Note to self read Thrix's record. oO Gorbets reclined in his chair, they rejected a simple request.

"Sirs, I am new to the boat so I am not about to tell you how to run the ship but when it comes to my department I want my men to advance. Sommers isn't the one who needs the help it seems if I had her salad I would wear it to bed at night. It seems my other junior lieutenant is the one who needs the work. Instead of bringing in my own officers I had already selected her to fill the role when on Coratha they told me I was being rotated to here. Which is why I said brevet rather then a full promotion. Now are there any situations aside from a bad assault that I have heard rumors of that happened? Will the marines be working in tandem with security or are we strictly beam down and fight kind of troops? I would prefer the men earn their keep while not being sent down somewhere to be eaten by the alien of the week." Gorebets said.

Ryan bit back a response due to the many years this marine officer had spent fighting. He took a deep breath and spoke in an even tone. "This ship has an ongoing mission of providing support for diplomatic missions. The marine units assigned to this ship will provide protection for diplomatic parties, whether they are Federation or visiting dignitaries from other sovereign powers."

"Honor guard detail alright, its a little different then what I am used to doing but I will adapt, are there any other orders or questions for me?" Gorbets asked looking around the room.

Sheena was a bit tight with how the Marine spoke, however his experience and she bit her tongue. "Captain Gorebets, I meant no disrespect to you sir. Your years of service speak for themselves and I am sure you will do well here. Welcome to the USS Leto," she said.

"Well sirs, I know I can seem a bit rough around the edges, I am a front line person. I also tend to always give you the honest truth. I know there is difficulty between the fleet and the marines for just that reason, not dishonesty but communication lines. It is my intent to have the marines support security, repel boarders and help load or unload cargo if needed. The standard responsibility of most marines on any ship. We can also be a real show of force if you need it. I have nothing but the most utmost respect for what you spacers do. There are odd reports I have read, senior officers getting harmed or putting themselves at risk needlessly. Captain Sterling, Commander Toran I hereby request a written copy of what is considered away team selection and procedures. Lieutenant Commander Ryan as it is tradition to post marines to act as security in highly sensitive areas, you have fire team Baker at your disposal for guard detail. My intent here is not, I repeat not to overstep bounds but to prevent incidents from happening which would put you or the rest of the command staff in danger. To that end that also includes data breaches or out and out theft of personel or material." Gorebets spoke in that same soft and relaxed tone that hadn't changed since he entered the room. He felt he was being reasonable and really hoped the staff didn't see it as anything other then geuine concern. His stomach then made an obvious growl.

"Commander Toran will be your direct supervisor and rater, as she is in charge of all the department heads. She will provide you with a written copy of what away team selection and procedures." Captain Sterling said.

Ryan's initial irritation with the way Captain Gorebets had spoken evaporated. His recent experience on Thorion III allowed him to understand somewhat what this man had experienced for years on end. He struck out his hand again towards James, a genuinely friendlier expression on his face. "It's a genuine honor and privilege to have you aboard Captain Gorebets. I look forward to coordinating with you on our respective departmental overlap."

"At 0430 Sergeant Brian Miller and a fire team of three men will come to Strategic Ops, A PFC Coleman will be a Tech guy. He is to be given a list of every officer who is allowed in that center. Inform your staff thumbprints will be checked on entry. One pair will remain outside of the door at all times two will guard the door directly to your office. They will verify the persons i.d and clear with you their presence. Tech Warfare will also give you an EMP device in case the ship gets boarded or has to be scuttled. That way nothing top secret ever leaves the office. That is at least the protocol its been on other vessels."

Gorebets returned the mans handshake. "Sir I think of it as my job to make sure everything is tucked in nice and right, and if we are going to be doing honor guard detail, I want to meet with the Diplomat and in house security to go over transport and security protocols."

Ryan listened to James. The news that a Marine fire team would be reporting to the Strategic Operations Center at 0430 tomorrow morning gave him cause to raise an eyebrow. He finally chuckled. "I only get up that early on days I do my cardio. How about we meet later in the lounge for an impromptu meeting and hammer out a few details over some food and drinks?"

"I figured at 0430 the checkpoint can be set up with little to no work on your end. Consider a midnight manuever meeting set up, first round is on you." Jimmy said with a nod,

"Sounds to me like He is trying to give you a freebie, Commander." Maia said.

"As for myself we pulled our last patrol a good six hours ago before we boarded a runabout here. Its that slightly damaged one sitting in the shuttlebay with the words Dropship Betty with the camo spray and combat sled. I forwarded a request for her to be fixed up when we got here. I would like to keep her for when we don't have working transporters or just need a dropship in general. Warrant Officer Keats flies her and is a good pilot one of the thirty I brought with me. I am asking permission to keep them both on." Gorebets asked.

"See to that Number One. Store the drop ship in bay 2 storage". Maia ordered.

"It shall be done," Sheena said smiling.

Gorebets also said, "I prefer to use the ship rather then a holodeck, if I need to take my men on a PT Jog is it permissible to take them full kit and run around? Some folks are finicky about armed troops jogging around like a juanta trying to seize power." He asked.

"If that is your tradition then so be it Mr. Gorebets." The Captain said.

"Anything else"? The Captain asked.

"Skipper my apologies if I dominated this conversation. I like to run a tight unit, This was meant to brief me and here I am making demands. Are there any orders or procedures I need to follow that are not on standard books?" He asked.

"A bit of advice, if I may, Mr Gorebets. Never apologies for standing your ground." Captain Sterling said.

Captain Sterling stood and offered her hand.

"Welcome to the Leto, Marine!" She said

James took her hand and shook it, "Its an honor to be here, and something I take very seriously. Sometimes you never know a sensibility or sensitivity of another officer. And I am sorry can fix a problem before it starts. The Corps doesn't train you to apologize but I like to think my parents raised me to not be a killing machine." James then offered a half smile.

"We are human beings, however when we are faced with danger and have no other choice but to kill for self preservation, how you are raised goes out the window. My father taught me that," Sheena said smiling as she inclined her head towards the marine captain.

"Oh-rah and ashes sir, Oh rah and ashes." Gorebets said. He then snapped to attention waiting to be dismissed or talked to further.

"I have an open door policy so if you need anything see the XO or talk to me. You are dismissed Captain tend to your troops." Maia said.
